July 30: World Day against Trafficking in Persons

Trafficking is modern-day slavery, which has existed all the times throughout human history, today also threatens the lives of human beings. Human Trafficking is a crime that strips people of their rights, ruins their dreams and robs them of their dignity. It is a crime that shames us all.  Millions of children, women and men are entrapped and exploited every year in this modern form of slavery.

The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed July 30 by the United Nations General Assembly and “Blue Heart” was chosen as the symbol of the fight against Trafficking. “Blue heart” is an international symbol to raise awareness on the plight of human trafficking victims. The Blue Heart represents the sadness of those who are trafficked while reminding us of the cold-heartedness of those who buy and sell fellow human beings.
In 2014 Armenia, together with other UN member countries, joined the “Blue Heart” ideology demonstrating its attitude towards this issue. The Working Group presented the symbolic character of “Blue Heart” by making a heart-shaped sign.

The results of Anti-Trafficking activities of Armenia are satisfying. This is evidenced by the US State Department’s Report on Human Trafficking, where Armenia has been ranked among the highest group (which is the first group) since 2013. The public and government agencies of this group use complete and sufficient efforts to combat human trafficking.

“Association of Audio-Visual Reporters” has major role combating against Trafficking.  Since 2003, AAVR NGO together with the Anti-Trafficking Working Group of Armenia, the State Department Bodies and NGOs struggles against the problem and realizes significant amount of work in this field: implements Information Campaigns, Meetings, Round-Table discussions, Knowledge Competitions, Trainings, and publishes special Video-clips (for Media Representatives), Public Service Announcements and is an author of books and leaflets.

Each of us can take part in the fight against human trafficking. Awareness is a key, because trafficking is a transnational crime taking place everywhere.

Joining the ideology of “Blue Heart” we will help to combat the “White Slavery” and will irretrievably erase the vestiges of modern slavery.
