Armenpress: Armenian Village Official Detained on Human Trafficking Charges Involving Forced Labour

The administrative head of Tatev settlement in Armenia’s Syunik region has been detained on human trafficking charges following an investigation into the alleged exploitation of a livestock worker, according to Armenia’s Investigative Committee.

Investigators reported that the victim had worked for the official since 2020 under an agreement providing a monthly salary of AMD 150,000–200,000. However, the worker allegedly received no regular wages and was instead given occasional payments of AMD 50,000–100,000.

According to the investigation, the suspect created an artificial debt of approximately AMD 6 million and claimed that the worker would have to continue working without payment for another three years.

The victim was reportedly forced to work from 6:00 a.m. until approximately 1:00 a.m., often without days off. Investigators also documented allegations of physical violence, threats and constant surveillance.

Despite several attempts to escape to Yerevan, the worker was allegedly brought back after the suspect pressured the victim’s relatives to disclose their whereabouts.

The administrative head has been charged under Article 188, Part 1 of Armenia’s Criminal Code, concerning human trafficking or exploitation, and placed in detention.

The criminal investigation remains ongoing. The accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a final court judgment.

The case highlights the risks of forced labour, debt bondage and exploitation in agricultural employment, emphasizing the importance of early identification and protection of trafficking victims.
