Journalist students learn how to report on violence against women and domestic violence
Through a series of online lectures on reporting violence against women and domestic violence in December 2020, for a group of 80 journalist students from three leading universities of Armenia discussed issues such as what gender equality means and how to avoid stereotyping and discriminative language and advertisements.
Zaruhi Hovhannisyan, a human rights activist and professional journalist, also discussed with students the essential role of media in raising awareness and shaping opinions and mentality or how to use rreliable information and effective interview techniques to bring the issue to the attention of the public. Media plays an important role in the prevention of violence against women and promotion of equal rights.
The media guideline on covering violence against women and domestic violence developed by the Council of Europe was piloted during these lectures.
“An opportunity to hear a professional, with an extensive experience in the field of human rights, discussing practical cases of reporting on domestic violence is a good opportunity for our students”, said Marina Alekyan, Head of the Chair of Journalism of the Russian-Armenian University and expressed interest in follow-up lectures to expand more on the topic.
The lectures were organised within the framework of the awareness raising activities of the Council of Europe project The Path towards Armenia’s Ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence.
