On July 30, 2026, the United Nations marked World Day Against Trafficking in Persons under the theme “Trapped Behind the Scam,” drawing attention to the growing exploitation of people forced to participate in online fraud operations.
According to the United Nations, criminal networks increasingly recruit victims through fraudulent job advertisements promising attractive employment opportunities abroad. Once recruited, individuals may be confined in scam compounds and forced to carry out romance scams, cryptocurrency fraud and other financial crimes.
Victims often face violence, threats, debt bondage and constant surveillance, making escape extremely difficult.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) estimates that online scams caused between $18 billion and $37 billion in financial losses across East and Southeast Asia in 2023 alone.
The 2026 campaign emphasizes that people coerced into criminal activities must be identified and protected as trafficking victims rather than automatically treated as offenders.
The United Nations calls for stronger international cooperation, improved victim identification, effective investigations and greater public awareness of deceptive recruitment practices.
